After watching and studying the two ballets, Romeo and Juliet and La Fille Mal Gardee, I have found many similarities in these two very different ballets.
The first is a forbidden love. It seems cliche, but apparently it makes a great story line for ballets! This forbidden love is pursued by the two lovers in both ballets, but only La Fille Mal Gardee has a “happily- ever- after” ending.
The second is a classic ballet. In the ballet world, there are those ballets that are super well known and performed frequently. La Fille Mal Gardee is the oldest ballet still being performed today, and Romeo and Juliet is a classic ballet that all people know through the Shakespeare literature.
Through these two similarities, there is one major difference. This difference is La Fille Mal Gardee is a light-hearted ballet, while Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that ends in a misunderstanding, lack of communication, and death.
I love both ballets for their different qualities. Romeo and Juliet is a very romantic and soft ballet with the music and slow, theatrical dancing, while La Fille Mal Gardee is a comedy that has mostly quick steps and festive music.
This is a picture from when I did La Fille Mal Gardee… I am the chicken on the far left.
