Compare/Contrast

I enjoyed Romeo and Juliet more than La Fille Mal Gardee only because I felt like Romeo and Juliet caused me to be more emotional. I did, however, enjoy the humor in La Fille Mal Gardee and the romance between Lise and Colas. The two ballets are similar in that they are about forbidden love, however La Fille Mal Gardee has a happy ending and the two lovers are able to be together verses Romeo and Juliet where the lovers both die. I noticed that the dances in La Fille Mal Gardee were somewhat faster and had quicker steps. Romeo and Juliet was more slow and emotional. I really enjoyed the costumes in La Fille Mal Gardee, especially the costumes worn by Lise. Her white wedding dress epecially stuck out to me because I thought it was so beautiful and moved beautifully in her dancing. I think the lightheartedness of La Fille Mal Gardee really set it apart from Romeo and Juliet.

  1. I think Natalie compared and contrasted the two ballets very well. I however think that i liked La Fille Mal Garde better because it was more humorous, entertaining, and light hearted. Although, their story lines are somewhat similar, the dancing style is very different. Romeo and Juliet’s passionate slow movements does pull out a lot of emotion, whereas the staccato and whimsical movements pull out the comedy of La Fille Mal Garde. They are both great ballets but strongly are similar and different from one another.
